Long condoms
Standard condoms are about 7 inches long, and the long condoms we found run from 190 mm up to 223 mm. The international standard sets 160 mm as the minimum length.
The standard in question is ISO 4074, and it says that a condom checked for length can't measure under 160 mm. According to ONE, standard condoms measure roughly 7 inches. Durex, quoting the NHS, puts the average erect length at 14 to 16 cm. In research covering 4,685 young Italian men, the average came out at 16.78 cm.
Extra long condoms compared
Many of the longest condoms are also some of the widest, so check the width as well as the length. A condom that's long enough but loose can slip off. Nominal width means the width of the condom when it lies flat, which works out as half its circumference. In the EU, packs have to show this figure.
| Snug fit | 52 | 2.05 | 200 | |
| Regular | 55 | 2.17 | 200 | |
| Large | 56 | 2.2 | 200 | |
| Large | 56 | 2.2 | 208 | |
| XL | 60 | 2.36 | 205 | |
| XXL | 64 | 2.52 | 223 | |
| XXXL | 69 | 2.72 | 210 |
All are latex. Width is measured across the condom while it lies flat, and it is the number each brand prints on the box. Tap a product name to see where its figures come from.
The manufacturer and shops we link to supplied these numbers. Measured width may differ by up to 2 mm in either direction under the ISO standard.
Condoms for 8 inches
That's just over 200 mm. The condoms listed as longer than that are Pasante King Size (205 mm), Pasante Super King (210 mm) and MY.SIZE PRO 64 (223 mm). The two LifeStyles condoms, at 200 mm, fall just short.
Trojan designed its Magnum for a penis of at least 7.1 inches in length and at least 4.75 inches in girth. Girth means the circumference of the erect penis where it's thickest.
Matching width to your girth
Length cuts down your options, but girth is what sets the width. The Mister Size girth table pairs each girth with a nominal width:
| Nominal width | Erect girth |
|---|---|
| 53 mm | From 10.5 up to 12 cm (about 4.13 to 4.72 in) |
| 57 mm | 12 up to 13.5 cm (about 4.72 to 5.31 in) |
| 60 mm | 13.5 up to 14.5 cm (about 5.31 to 5.71 in) |
| 64 mm | 14.5 up to 15.5 cm (about 5.71 to 6.10 in) |
| 69 mm | 15.5 cm or more (6.10 in or more) |
If you measure around 13.5 to 14.5 cm, the 60 mm Pasante King Size fits the table. For 14.5 to 15.5 cm, the match is MY.SIZE PRO 64.
Condom size for 9 inches
The longest condom we found, MY.SIZE PRO 64, is 223 mm, so none of these quite reach 9 inches.
Width becomes the deciding factor instead. Use the girth table and go with the condom whose width matches your girth.
Is your condom too short?
Pinching, rolling up or breaking usually means it's too small. Slipping or bunching points to one that's too big. Durex notes that a poor fit makes breaking and slipping more likely, and a loose condom can come off during sex.
If a condom keeps rolling up or pinches, that usually means it's too small rather than too short, so it's worth measuring your girth before you try a longer brand.
Measuring before you buy
Condom sizes are worked out from measurements taken while erect.
- Take a soft measuring tape, or a bit of string, and wrap it once round the widest point of the hard shaft, usually just below the head.
- With string, straighten it against a ruler and read off the length.
- Look up your girth in the girth table and take the nominal width it gives you.
- Check the length on the pack or on the manufacturer's own page.
Where the width comes from
We matched widths using the Mister Size girth table, so you can just measure your girth and look it up instead of dividing it by pi as Okamoto suggests.
Questions people ask
Which size suits 6, 7 or 8 inches?
For 6 or 7 inches, an ordinary condom of about 7 inches will cover the length. At 8 inches, turn to the condoms longer than 200 mm. Either way, let your girth pick the width.
Does condom length matter?
It does, but extra length isn't something most people need. ONE reports that standard condoms are longer than needed by 91% of people; they're too tight for 50% and too loose for 30%. Width is what causes trouble more often.
Can you estimate girth without a tape?
ONE suggests measuring around the inside of a toilet paper roll; theirs came out at roughly 5 inches. Brands vary, so treat this as a rough guide only.
Should a condom fit tighter than you?
ONE advises that the condom's circumference should be a touch smaller than yours, so it holds its place.
